Here's a statement from Peter Tiu Lavina, Duterte Campaign Media Head on the controversy regarding Mayor Duterte's recent "joke" about rape....
Mayor Duterte has his own way of narrating events and telling stories. As usual he is frank, cryptic and sometimes humorous. But many times as well, his delivery gets muddled because of his language and the way he speaks.
During the April 12 Amoranto Stadium sortie where he spoke at 1 a.m., the mayor was clearly playing to the gallery so the video shows people were jovial and laughing at his story telling. What he meant when he said “naunahan pa ang mayor” was not about raping the Australian. What he meant was that he was beaten to the draw by the hostage-takers and he was late in saving the life of the woman missionary.
It is truly unfortunate that his heroic act is being mis-interpreted with malice by his detractors.
